New York Mets — Carlos Correa
Do we really need to go into the offseason drama here? I think we are all done with the Correa saga, and it can be argued that the Mets really didn’t need to spend that much money on the All-Star shortstop. However, there are few players that eluded Steve Cohen this offseason and Correa is one of them.
Atlanta Braves — Matt Carpenter
Like the Mets, Atlanta doesn’t have a lot of needs, but the Braves did pass on re-signing Dansby Swanson this offseason with the plan that Vaughn Grissom can handle shortstop duties just fine. While he might not have been slotted in as a starter, Carpenter could have provided some depth at a number of positions for the Braves, just like he will now in San Diego.
Washington Nationals — Nelson Cruz
A reunion with Washington wasn’t in the cards for Cruz, who looks to be chasing a ring by signing a one-year deal with the Padres this offseason. The Nationals need offense and faces to draw fans to the park, and Cruz, who is loved in the clubhouse, could have provided benefits on and off the field for a Washington franchise that feels in need of direction at the moment.
Miami Marlins — Brandon Drury
The versatile Drury was linked to Miami earlier in the offseason, and he certainly could have helped the Marlins at the plate and in the field. For a pitching-rich Miami team looking to get stronger at the plate, Drury could have been someone who could have filled a number of roles.
Philadelphia Phillies — Chris Bassitt
Bassitt got Phillies fans in a frenzy with an Instagram post about the City of Brotherly Love, but ended up signing in Toronto instead. Philadelphia signed Taijuan Walker from the Mets to boost the rotation, but Bassitt in a Phillies uniform certainly would have been another solid signing in what has been a strong offseason for the defending NL champions.
