Patriots legend would return to New England if Tom Brady does too
Modern Patriots legend Devin McCourty was asked about a return to New England for 2023 and he’d be up for it if another legend returns too: Tom Brady.
Since being drafted in the first round by the New England Patriots out of Rutgers in 2010, Devin McCourty has enjoyed immense success. He’s been a three-time Second-Team All-Pro selection and won three Super Bowls when Tom Brady helmed the offense. But now his time with the team who drafted him could be nearing its end.
McCourty is a free agent this offseason and will be 36 years old whenever the 2023 NFL season kicks off. For a defensive back, that’s nearing uncharted territory in the modern iteration of the league. However, McCourty is not shutting the door on a return to New England.
He does, however, have a condition for that.
Devin McCourty would return to Patriots if Tom Brady does too
During an appearance on NFL Gameday, McCourty was asked what Tom Brady should do this offseason. The 13-year veteran defensive back said he thinks that the quarterback should go back to the Patriots before adding that he’d go back with his former QB.
Might as well write that in stone now, right?
In all seriousness, McCourty might’ve been jesting about this. But at the same time, maybe not. The idea of Brady returning to New England has been floated plenty of times before already and it would make sense. In fact, the part that might make the least sense is McCourty returning at his age.
Having said that, the Patriots as an organization have long valued loyalty and longevity. And if the quarterback and safety that have helped guide the franchise to a dynastic number of rings want to be back in the fold for the 2023 season and however long after, you have to believe the front office would listen to the pitch.
