5 Packers players who could follow Aaron Rodgers out the door
Aaron Rodgers wants Marcedes Lewis around, but the Packers probably don’t
More so than Randall Cobb, Marcedes Lewis might be past his prime but has still remained an important and useful piece for the Green Bay offense. At the same time, though, the truth of the matter is that one of the reasons he’s still been on the roster is because he has a good relationship with Aaron Rodgers, who recognizes the value that he brings to the offense.
It’s been quite a while since Lewis, who was drafted back in 2006, has been a truly productive pass-catcher. In fact, the 2022 season was the second-worst of his entire career as, despite playing and starting in all 17 games, he caught only six passes on seven targets for 66 yards. Not good.
His value, however, has come in his leadership and his still-potent ability as a run-blocker. That has been an asset for the offense. But now getting dangerously close to 40 years old, just how valuable would that be to the Packers if they are hitting the reset button on the roster?
From where I’m sitting, the answer is not valuable at all. He’s a luxury piece for a team that has Aaron Rodgers and, as such, believes they have Super Bowl aspirations. When you then remove the quarterback from the equation, it becomes far less viable for Lewis to be part of the team moving forward.
