Yair Rodriguez capped off a barn burner of a fight with a tight triangle choke on Josh Emmett that makes him the interim UFC featherweight champion.

UFC 284‘s main card has seen some brilliant finishes, and the co-main event between Yair Rodriguez and Josh Emmett may be the best so far.

Both fighters put it all out there, trying their best to win the interim UFC featherweight title. However, in the second round, Rodriguez distanced himself, looking more powerful and accurate, and eventually capping the performance off with a triangle choke for the victory.

Rodriguez landed 62 significant strikes, and despite never taking any control time, submitted Emmett in only two rounds. Emmett maintained three minutes and one second of control time, but only managed 22 significant strikes and no submission attempts.

MMA Twitter had encouraging and exciting words for the new featherweight champion.

Many fighters took to Twitter to congratulate the new champion and revel in his brilliant performance.

And of course, Belal Muhammad said what we were all thinking about the next step.

The next step for Rodriguez as champion will be waiting for a title unification bout with the current featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski, who is fighting in the main event of UFC 284 for Islam Makhachev’s UFC lightweight title.
