Are the Kansas City Chiefs a dynasty? Quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn’t ready to crown them with that terminology just yet.

Patrick Mahomes has two Super Bowls to his name after defeating the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night. He did so on one leg, depending on who’s medical advice you choose to believe.

Mahomes won Super Bowl MVP in a memorable performance in which he completed 21-of-27 passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for an extra 44 yards for good measure — on that aforementioned one good leg.

It’s an impressive addition to Mahomes’ resume, and a step towards football immortality. It could be argued he’s already a Hall-of-Fame talent. Individually, Mahomes has already achieved everything most players dream of. But Mahomes isn’t most players.

Mahomes grew up watching Tom Brady and the New England Patriots dominate the football landscape. He was even defeated by Brady in his lone Super Bowl defeat thus far. Those are the expectations he has for this Chiefs team. They’re one more step towards those goals.

Patrick Mahomes: Chiefs aren’t a dynasty yet

While Kansas City likely needs another Super Bowl to cement itself in that kind of terminology, there is no denying that the Chiefs are the team of this era. They’ve made it to five straight AFC Championship Games, and three Super Bowls — winning two of those games. Mahomes has, for the most part, been at the center of that run. And he’s not close to finished.

Brett Veach and Co. signed Mahomes to what can only be described as a lifelong contract. If it ever comes close to ending, it’s likely time for Mahomes to hang up his cleats.

But Mahomes is just 27 years old. He has more Super Bowl victories than Aaron Rodgers, and tied Peyton Manning and John Elway on Sunday. He’s matched some of the game’s great quarterbacks, and he has yet to (in theory) reach his prime.

Kansas City is not a dynasty yet. The safe money is on them reaching those aspirations in the near future, and redefining the term dynasty altogether.
