4 free agents the Packers should happily let leave
2. Dean Lowry
Green Bay’s three-man defensive line doesn’t lend itself to a ton of sacks for its defensive ends, but Lowry’s total of one in 15 starts last season accurately shows just how much he leaves to be desired as a starter. It’s time for the Packers to let the 28-year-old veteran walk and secure an upgrade to replace him.
Lowry didn’t just fail as a pass rusher last season. His PFF grade of 59.3 shows he wasn’t good at setting the edge against the run either. Finding a defensive end who can take up space and clog up running lanes would be a cheap proposition for the Packers’ front office.
Taking the cheap route isn’t the right move for Green Bay. This team needs to find a playmaker for their defensive line in the off-season. Spending a first-round pick on a talented end like Lukas Van Ness with the No. 15 overall selection should be something worth considering for Green Bay.
No matter what, bringing back Lowry as a starter for another campaign would be a weak move by a Packers’ front office that wants to get this team back to the playoffs. An upgrade is required at defensive end which should result in Lowry getting paid by someone else in 2023.
