3. If the Saints could pull it off, Justin Fields would make them a real contender

Though there is still a good chance that the New Orleans Saints could sign Derek Carr following his release from the Raiders, the truth is that their odds to make that happen are much lesser now that they were unable to figure out a trade that Carr would sign off on. And that’s a problem for this current Saints roster.

You could make the argument that the only thing that New Orleans is truly lacking on their roster is a viable option at quarterback. Yes, there are other holes, but the simple truth is that they were competitive in the lowly NFC South this past season with overall horrendous quarterback play from Andy Dalton over the majority of the season.

Trading for Justin Fields would change that and, after the Sean Payton trade, they now have a first-round pick to help sweeten any trade package to send Chicago’s way.

It’s looking more apparent that Michael Thomas doesn’t want to be in New Orleans anymore, but he can be a sweetener to entice the Bears given their need at wide receiver. The Saints don’t have the valuable picks that others do, so this could really help them move Chicago to make this trade.

In all honesty, this could be the best course of action for the Saints if they can get the Bears to bite on it. Carr is fine, but he lacks the promise and dynamic ability that a player like Fields brings to the table while also being much younger. For a traditionally aggressive franchise, this is something they have to explore.
