Georgia football: Way-too-early game-by-game predictions for 2023
By John Buhler
Last year was last year, but this year is now between Georgia and Missouri
Much will be made about how Georgia coulda, woulda, shoulda almost lost to Missouri up in CoMo. Well, who loses to Mizzou up in CoMo? Not Georgia, never have. This one will be in Athens, but it will be a game where Smart will tell his boys to remember how hard the Tigers played them a season ago. With Dominic Lovett now playing for UGA, look for him to go off vs. his former team.
Winner: Georgia (9-0)
Lane Train could challenge Georgia but “Who’s that coming down the track?!”
As with South Carolina, Ole Miss coming to town is the other game at Sanford Stadium Dawg Nation should be worried about. Lane Kiffin is a clever offensive mind, one who could draw up a few plays to catch the Dawgs while they are asleep. However, it will be the Mean Machine in Red and Black coming down the track. There is nothing finer in the land and nothing Lane Train can do.
Winner: Georgia (10-0)
This game will almost certainly decide who is getting to Atlanta out of the East
Without debate, this is the biggest game on Georgia’s relatively weak slate in 2023. The Dawgs will have to make the trek to Knoxville to take on Josh Heupel’s Tennessee Volunteers. Rocky Top may not have its 25-year-old quarterback anymore, but neither will Georgia. At 10-0 with a shot at going undefeated in SEC play for the third year in a row, the Dawgs will three-peat … in-division.
Winner: Georgia (11-0)
Georgia refuses to lose at Historic Mark Richt Field at Bobby Dodd Stadium
Brent Key may give the North Avenue Trade School Bumblebees a little more sting than they have had in years. No, the Ramblin’ Wreck is not going to triple-option the Dawgs to death, but they will be better. Unfortunately, not since Bill Clinton was in the White House have the Bulldogs lost at Historic Mark Richt Field at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Joe Hamilton is not walking through that door…
Winner: Georgia (12-0)
Georgia football 2023 season outcome
So I have Georgia going 12-0 (8-0) for the third year in a row. What gives, Buhler? Their schedule. It is not that hard, folks. Had the Oklahoma game not been canceled for expansionary reasons, it might have been a tad more difficult, but here we are. In truth, Georgia is winning around 10 and 12 regular-season games, probably getting back to Atlanta and likely reaching the playoff again.
Like I said, the South Carolina, Ole Miss and Tennessee games are the ones to watch. A loss to the Rebels is the least damning, but it will also be Senior Day… The Gamecocks and Volunteers are in contention for the SEC East crown, so do not lose to them, y’all. The winner of LSU at Alabama probably gets to face the Dawgs in Atlanta for the right to be SEC Champions and be the No. 1 seed in the Sugar Bowl.
A new flavor of the week will emerge to think about maybe beating UGA, but I know where I stand.
