NFL Rumors: Derek Carr isn’t taking a discount…but should he?
If NFL teams thought that, after the Raiders released Derek Carr, that they’d be able to get a discount on the veteran quarterback, they definitely thought wrong.
According to Pro Football Talk and ESPN’s Dianna Russini, Carr is seeking a contract with an average annual value of $35 million this offseason. That’s only slightly less than the $40.5 million AAV that he had on the last deal he signed with Las Vegas prior to the franchise electing to move on from him at the end of this past season.
In addition to the reported contract demands for Carr, it’s also been widely reported that the veteran signal-caller is content to take his time in free agency and not be the first quarterback to make a decision on where he’ll play next year.
The real question, though, is if Carr is worth it? While you could argue that the Raiders were a bit over-reactionary to let the quarterback walk, the fact of the matter is that he’s a cast-off veteran. In the current market, $35 million per season isn’t all that expensive, but it is a much more expensive option than perhaps someone like Jimmy Garoppolo, a draft pick or a number of cheaper options.
Coming with this type of price tag, it’ll be fascinating to see what could happen with Carr when he is ready to sign.
