Saying goodbye isn’t easy, but that’s because it was a great time

After almost eight years at FanSided, Matt Verderame gives a fond farewell to his co-workers and most of all, the readers over the years.

Author Ritu Ghatourey once wrote “Goodbyes make you think. They make you realize what you’ve had, what you’ve lost, and what you’ve taken for granted.”

This is such an occasion. Come next week, I’ll be covering the NFL elsewhere.

It’s incredible to think I’ve been at FanSided for a month shy of eight years. In that time, I went from being a single 26-year-old to a married father of three. During my tenure here, I have celebrated the birth of my two daughters and my marriage. I also mourned the loss of my son.

It’s incredible how quickly eight years passes, even when at times it can feel like an eternity. Days race by. Months fade. Years tear away like calendar pages.

I started writing this column five years ago because it felt like a good piece to center our NFL coverage around. It started as a Monday morning feature that stretched for 1,500 words. It finished almost double in size. Turns out, I have a lot to say.

Writing Stacking The Box was never easy, but that’s what made it such a fun labor of love.

I always strived to make this space insightful, entertaining and informative. Hopefully I succeeded more often than not.

Ultimately, moving on simultaneously a tough and an easy decision.

It was tough because I love FanSided and the people here. When you consume its content, understand you’re supporting the best. I couldn’t be more thankful for my time spent helping this company grow with whatever small impact I had.

Yet it was easy because occasionally one needs a new challenge. Having almost spent a decade at the same desk, it was time. There’s nothing wrong with acknowledging the fact you’ve done the best you can, but are ready to take a chance on something new.

In this moment, I find myself filled with gratitude. This business is brutal. It’s not uncommon to be laid off. I’ve been steadily employed, while always being made to feel valued. At times, I overlooked that. It needs to be mentioned, because it’s rare in this industry.

Finally, to every reader, thank you. Thanks for being supportive, and for being critical. Thanks for commenting and sending emails. Thanks for caring about what I have to say about all things football, and on the rare occasion, other topics as well.

Most of all, thanks for making my work matter. I’m forever indebted.
