NFL Rumors: Vikings make Kirk Cousins sweat, Cowboys franchise tag and Jets surprise QB target
NFL Rumors: Vikings making Kirk Cousins sweat over his next contract
When Kirk Cousins was entering the final year of the second contract the quarterback had signed with the Minnesota Vikings last offseason, the organization opted to ink the veteran signal-caller to a one-year, $35 million extension that would sign him through the end of the 2023 season.
Now we’re entering the same scenario this offseason for a bit of deja vu, but what won’t be repeating is the same process. According to a report from NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the Vikings aren’t going to sign Cousins to a one-year extension and, instead, will either sign him to a long-term extension or play out the remainder of his deal and at least start to hit free agency.
This could be a fascinating development. On the one hand, Cousins led the team to a 13-4 record this past season. On the other, Minnesota missed the playoffs in the previous two years. Moreover, Cousins is set to be 35 years old at the conclusion of the 2023 campaign. Would he want to test the market and bet on himself or lock up long-term security with the Vikings by signing a new deal?
For a quarterback who was franchise tagged twice in Washington and has had a highly unusual career path in terms of his contracts, this is another curious addition to the saga that will definitely have Cousins sweating over what to do.
