NFL Rumors: Vikings make Kirk Cousins sweat, Cowboys franchise tag and Jets surprise QB target
NFL Rumors: Cowboys ‘probably’ using franchise tag and the top candidate is obvious
In a wide-ranging interview with ESPN Cowboys insider Todd Archer, the executive vice president, CEO, and director of player personnel for the franchise, Stephen Jones, talked about a number of critical components of the 2023 offseason. And while he wouldn’t go into specifics about Tony Pollard and Ezekiel Elliott, he did seemingly give a big hint.
When asked about the possibility of the Cowboys utilizing the franchise tag this offseason, Jones made it clear that Dallas was open to the idea. More pointedly, Jones noted that the team would “probably use it again this year”.
Last offseason, Dallas put the franchise tag on tight end Dalton Schultz, who is now slated to hit free agency after playing the 2022 campaign on the tag. While he could be a candidate to be tagged, the expectation remains that it will be Pollard getting the franchise tag this offseason with the explosive pending free agent about to hit the market.
The value for a running back playing on the tag in the 2023 season will be $10.091 million, which is perhaps a bit less than the AAV Pollard could receive on the open market. However, with the Cowboys trying to decipher how to get out of the Elliott contract, the one-year pact that tag offers could make the most sense for Dallas to make sure one of their best weapons doesn’t leave the building.
