MLB news: Seiya Suzuki will miss his chance to recruit Shohei Ohtani

Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki made waves by suggesting he’d try to recruit Shohei Ohtani to Chicago while playing for Team Japan in the World Baseball Classic. Unfortunately, he won’t get that chance thanks to an oblique injury, which will keep him out for the tournament.

Suzuki was diagnosed with a mild oblique strain, with not timetable for a return to game action. The Cubs are hopeful he won’t miss any regular season baseball, but it’s certainly not worth risking his long-term health for the WBC.

Manager David Ross was unwilling to discuss Suzuki’s status for Opening Day. If Suzuki is forced to miss the first few weeks of the season, the Cubs could sub either Trey Mancini or Patrick Wisdom in the outfield. Both have experience in the outfield, and Ross could platoon the pair depending on the opposing starting pitcher.
