MLB news: Gavin Lux’s awful injury update, Seiya Suzuki to miss WBC, Oli Marmol-CB Bucknor feud
By Mark Powell
MLB news: Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Gavin Lux appears to have suffered the first major injury of MLB Spring Training.
Gavin Lux was rounding third base when he suffered what appeared to be a major leg injury against the San Diego Padres on Monday afternoon. Lux, a former top prospect who can play multiple positions, was expected to be the team’s Opening Day shortstop.
Without Lux in play, the Dodgers lackluster offseason suddenly looks much worse. There were four big-name shortstops available on the market — including their own Trea Turner — and Los Angeles opted for none. Instead, they’ll wait until next winter to make a run at two-way player Shohei Ohtani.
MLB news news: Who will replace Gavin Lux for Dodgers?
In the meantime, Dave Robert’s group is still expected to make a playoff run. That’ll be tough to achieve without Lux.
Lux underwent an MRI but the Dodgers have yet to inform the media of results. Should he be forced to miss significant time, the easiest solution would be to have Miguel Rojas fill that void. However, the Dodgers could bring in another starting shortstop from outside the organization, as unlikely as that sounds.
On Monday, I pitched three potential replacements — including Rojas, Jose Iglesias (a free agent) and Isiah Kiner-Filefa (a trade candidate from the Yankees). It hasn’t been a positive start to the spring for LA.
