Daniel Jones rumors: 5 best fits in free agency
3. Top Free Agent Fits For Daniel Jones – Indianapolis Colts
Another team that has been searching for its long-term answer at quarterback is the Colts. Since Andrew Luck retired Indianapolis has tried Jacoby Brissett, Philip Rivers, Carson Wentz, Matt Ryan, Nick Foles and Sam Ehlinger under center but none of them established themselves as more than a temporary solution.
Colts’ owner Jim Irsay made it clear he wants to stop the merry-go-round this offseason and most experts have assumed they will use the No. 4 pick to either draft a quarterback or trade up to No. 1 to get one. Drafting a passer is a smart idea but burning draft capital for the future to get an unproven rookie isn’t the only option Indianapolis has available to improve the position.
Getting a 25-year-old quarterback coming off his best year with a new offensive-minded head coach in Shane Steichen makes a lot of sense. Steichen was previously the offensive coordinator in Philadelphia, where he designed an offense with a mobile quarterback that was highly effective, making Indianapolis a good match for Jones.
Any trade discussions with the Giants would have to involve protecting the No. 4 overall pick in this year’s draft, instead offering a second-rounder this year and multiple first-rounders in 2024 and 2025 instead. Being able to use the No. 4 pick to add an elite prospect and send off future assets to land Jones would allow the Colts to finally have a long-term plan with a proven NFL quarterback.
