2) Red Sox starting pitcher James Paxton

James Paxton has shown that he can be a good starting pitcher but, unfortunately for the Red Sox and for him, he has shown that he is rarely healthy.

Since making his MLB debut with Seattle all the way back in 2013, Paxton has never pitched in more than 160.1 innings in a season. He also has never made more than 29 starts in a season and only more than 20 starts in a season twice. But from 2016 through 2019, he had a 116 ERA+.

Last offseason, the Red Sox signed him to a two-year deal. They knew that he would miss most of the season since he went under the knife for Tommy John surgery in April 2021, but he ended up missing the entire 2022 season after he made only six appearances in 2020 and 2021 combined.

This year, he has already suffered a hamstring strain and is likely to be out for Opening Day.

If he shows that he is healthy and the team is out of the playoff hunt, Boston will likely try to unload him while they still can.

There’s also another reason why he could be expendable but more on that in a moment.
