NFL Rumors: Bills’ elite defensive duo could dip a toe in free agency waters
Per reports by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Buffalo Bills are expected to let safety Jordan Poyer and linebacker Tremaine Edmunds test free agency.
Bills general manager Brandon Beane stated at the end of the 2022 season that he would ideally want both Poyer and Edmunds to return, but the team doesn’t have much salary cap flexibility. Poyer was the rumored candidate to get franchise-tagged this season; since Buffalo is currently over next year’s cap, though, the team probably wasn’t planning on using the tag at all.
Nothing is concrete, and Poyer and Bills could still hash out a long-term deal to prove the rumors wrong.
The star safety signed a four-year, $13 million deal with Buffalo back in 2017, and after six productive seasons he ranks as one of the top safeties set to hit free agency.
As for potential landing spots, Poyer said in February that he would love to go to a state that “doesn’t take half my money,” referring to New York’s steep income tax.
He and Edmunds would serve as two unfortunate cap casualties that nonetheless can get their payday on a team with more money to spend next season. Poyer, in particular, could find a willing suitor in the Miami Dolphins, possibly heading to a state where he can keep all of his un-taxed money and enjoy the much, much warmer weather.
