MLB news: Could New York Yankees have another pitching option?

With the news that starting pitchers Carlos Rodon and Frankie Montas will both start the season on the injured list, as will relievers Lou Trivino and Tommy Kahnle, the Yankees are scrambling to see which pitchers might not only fill those vacant positions, but fill them at a high level as well.

While plenty of possibilities being discussed about who might slide into the New York pitching mix to begin the season, one name that is beginning to see some traction is Jimmy Cordero.

The 31-year-old right-hander has appeared in 83 games over his three-year MLB career with the Washington Nationals, Toronto Blue Jays, and Chicago White Sox, but hasn’t been on a big league mound since the 2020 season. However, that could change this season as the reliever has impressed early in spring camp.

In 4.0 innings spread over four games, Cordero has allowed just one hit and has struck out two of the 13 batters he has faced.

Cordero’s pitch mix has featured a heavy sinker mix in the past and continued in his most recent spring outing, with nine of his 10 pitches being sinkers.

With the Yankees needing arms and Cordero on the roster, it could be a solid match in the Bronx.
