3 Yankees players who should be looking over their shoulders for Jasson Dominguez
1. Aaron Hicks
Hicks is currently the Yankees’ projected starter in left field by default. If the position was being awarded purely on Spring Training contributions, Dominguez might already have Hicks headed elsewhere.
Hicks is another player who has seen his performance decline sharply due to injury. He claims to be healthy heading into the 2023 campaign, but expecting him to stay healthy for a full season is more of a hope than a plan. The Yankees know they have to have another left fielder capable of playing at least 50 games to make the position work.
Right now, that player is Oswaldo Cabrera, but he projects as a super-utility player rather than a high-level hitter at a corner outfield spot. Yankees fans shouldn’t be surprised if Dominguez starts getting reps in left field to serve as an insurance policy in case Hicks suffers another major injury.
Hicks still has multiple years left on his contract, but he can’t afford to struggle to start the season in the majors. If he does, the Yankees will be forced to pull the plug on him as a starter. A trade for an upgrade is always a possibility, but promoting Dominguez could become the plan if he lights up the minors to start the year.
