NFL Rumors: Brandin Cooks trade is the benchmark for DeAndre Hopkins

The Brandin Cooks trade provided the clearest comparison for Arizona Cardinals wideout DeAndre Hopkins, should any willing suitor want to go after DHop.

Cooks, a 29-year-old wideout, was due $32 million on his contract, and he got moved at the cost of a 2023 fifth-rounder and 2024 sixth-rounder; the Texans also opted to eat a portion of his contract.

Hopkins, a 30-year-old wideout, is due roughly $34 million on his contract. Previous estimates for his trade were a second-round pick plus “something else of value,” but Cooks’ trade may have lowered the bar.

There’s no doubt that Hopkins is the higher-upside option even with his injury history, showing just a glimpse of his big-play abilities in nine games last season. Also a former Texan like Cooks, Hopkins caught 64 passes for 717 yards even when playing on an underachieving Cardinals offense.

Hopkins’ rumored suitors include the New York Giants, New England Patriots, and Kansas City Chiefs with the Chiefs being the most intriguing option on the list. After Cooks was dealt at a Goodwill price, Hopkins may also represent a bargain-bin option in the wide receiver free agent market.

Pickings are scarce out there, and any receiver-needy team would be foolish not to at least ask about Hopkins this offseason.
