NFL rumors: Bill Belichick’s eventual replacement could be in the building
Bill Belichick can’t coach forever. We’ve already seen one-half of the epic New England Patriots dynasty move on from the NFL (we think, at least, Tom Brady could decide to unretire, who knows?!). Belichick is going to be next to leave the competitive side of the NFL behind at some point.
He’s coached since 1991 (Patriots since 2000) and is the active leader in regular season and postseason victories as a head coach. He’s the all-time leader in postseason victories and stands behind just Don Shula for regular season wins.
According to a recent article from Chad Graff at The Athletic, Jerod Mayo is believed to be the front-runner for the Patriots head coaching job (subscription required) in the near future. Many think that the reason Mayo re-upped his deal with New England this offseason despite interest from teams in vacant head coaching roles is that the franchise signaled to him that he’d be their choice to replace Belichick if he stuck around.
