NFL rumors: Cam Newton working out for teams at Auburn pro day
Cam Newton is going to make his pitch to quarterback-needy NFL teams at Auburn’s pro day today, Tuesday. The former MVP-winning QB took to Twitter to confirm that he’d be throwing on Monday:
His video featured him taking a shot at “randoms” that keep getting jobs, and making a claim that there aren’t 32 quarterbacks better than him.
That would suggest Newton believes not only is he capable of making an NFL roster, but he’s expecting a starting role.
Newton hasn’t played since 2021 when he signed with the Carolina Panthers, the team he started his career with, midway through the season. As a starter, Newton went winless in five attempts, throwing just four touchdowns and five interceptions.
The quarterback landscape is in the midst of serious change, and there are dominos yet to officially fall. Aaron Rodgers is expected to be traded to the Jets, and Lamar Jackson may or may not be back with the Baltimore Ravens next year. Several teams could use Newton on their squad as a backup, but few have a desperate enough need to sign Newton with the intention of starting him. The Washington Commanders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the only teams that make sense.
In Washington, Newton would be the de facto starter unless Washington makes a surprise move for a different quarterback. In Tampa, Newton would need to compete with the recently-signed Baker Mayfield for the starting role.
One could make the case that the Colts could use Newton as well, but they are positioned in the draft where they could instead take a swing on a young quarterback.
