NFL rumors: The latest on DeAndre Hopkins trade; Chiefs, Patriots, and more
By Josh Wilson
Here’s why you shouldn’t expect the Chiefs to land DeAndre Hopkins in trade
While DeAndre Hopkins is one of the first receivers that comes to mind when thinking about how the Chiefs can backfill the losses of Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster, don’t expect the Chiefs to be major players.
The reason is similar to why the Patriots have backed out: Cost. And it’s a display of why the Cardinals will struggle to move Hopkins at their current ask for draft capital without picking up some of Hopkins’ salary for the team taking him on.
Aaron Wilson reported that the Chiefs and Ravens are both out on Hopkins primarily because of the cost. He also suggested the Bills are the current front-runners. Benjamin Allbright did not refute that and confirmed the Bills have been involved.
While Hopkins would be an electric add for Patrick Mahomes after losing Hardman and Smith-Schuster, the Chiefs have proven time and time again they don’t need A-list receivers to get the job done. Mahomes can make it work with just about any competent, pro-level receiver. Would Hopkins be that much of a ceiling lifter to make it worth the loss of draft capital while also having to pay Hopkins what he’s due?
Honestly, maybe not.
