College Football rumors: Georgia spring practice update on QB battle, key RB injury

Kirby Smart enters the 2023 season with thoughts of a Georgia Bulldogs three-peat dancing around his head like visions of sugarplums on the night before Christmas. But much of the focus on that pursuit coming into the spring has been on the quarterback battle with 38-year-o…I mean two-time national champion and 2022 Heisman finalist Stetson Bennett IV now gone.

Perhaps the biggest and most concerning update, though, has been regarding senior running back Kendall Milton. Expected to be the lead back in the patented Georgia committee in the backfield, Milton is sidelined for the rest of spring practice after suffering a hamstring injury and the coaching staff electing to not push him with that.

The Dawgs are well-equipped to handle a Milton injury with Daijun Edwards, Branson Robinson and bruising Roderick Robinson all in the fold. However, it’s less than ideal given that Milton dealt with similar injuries in the 2022 season and they’re already cropping again.

As for the aforementioned quarterback battle, though, the update thus far is that there isn’t really an update — and there might not be one with any kind of substance for quite a while.

With Carson Beck (the presumed favorite), Brock Vandagriff and Gunnar Stockton locked in the battle, Smart isn’t hurrying a decision. In fact, he indicated that it could last into the fall.

“I don’t think we’re going to overdo the quarterbacks in the spring,” Smart said, via Dawg Nation on March 24. “We’re going to let those guys develop.

“They all need reps, and they all need game reps, and we can’t get enough of that.”

That’s basically the rub for the Dawgs quarterback situation, though. Beck is the only one of the trio with in-season experience, but it’s been limited mop-up duty at most. And while Vandagriff and Stockton were highly recruited, the inexperience is a factor. As such, it’s going to take more than the spring to make the right call by Smart and new offensive coordinator Mike Bobo’s estimation.
