College football rumors: Arch Manning’s start at Texas, Georgia and Ohio State spring practice updates
College football rumors from around the country with spring practice updates on Arch Manning at Texas, defending champion Georgia, and new-look Ohio State.
College football programs are getting into the thick of spring practice right now and, with that, comes a bevy of rumors and reports about the big-time storylines throughout the country. Obviously, it can be hard to keep up with everything that comes out of there — especially when many of these practices are either not open to the media or aren’t widely reported upon.
That doesn’t mean that college football fans rabid to get back to the gridiron aren’t salivating for big spring practice updates. How is Arch Manning doing at Texas as the much-hyped freshman battles with Quinn Ewers? What do the back-to-back champion Georgia Bulldogs look like as they replace Stetson Bennett IV? How are things shaping up for Ryan Day and Ohio State with their own big quarterback loss?
We have some updates from rounding up several college football rumors that will help provide some answers to those questions.
College Football rumors: Ohio State QB battle coming along, early standouts and injuries
Outside of Bryce Young at Alabama — and maybe not even then — no high-profile college football program has a bigger task and/or question at quarterback than the Ohio State Buckeyes. C.J. Stroud was a two-time Heisman finalist and now Ryan Day is looking at unproven junior Kyle McCord and redshirt freshman Devin Brown as the options to be Stroud’s successor.
Thus far, there have been ups and downs in the quarterback battle. The first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday, March 25 saw both McCord and Brown start off slow but then find a groove as they went along. It was McCord, however, who made the biggest impression with a number of explosive plays to several different receivers, which is a good sign for the prolific offense loaded with pass-catchers.
Speaking of standouts from that scrimmage, the Ohio State defensive line received a ton of praise from Day, but Jack Sawyer did a good job separating himself. As the other end opposite potential superstar JT Tuimoloau and moving into a full-time edge rushing role, he got consistent pressure off the end and seemed primed to make an impact in his new full-time role.
Amid these good feelings, though, it’s worth noting that the Buckeyes are not currently the picture of health at spring practice. Tuesday’s session saw the likes of TreVeyon Henderson, Caleb Burton, Tommy Eichenberg, and several others only going through non-contact walkthroughs in the practice.
This isn’t the time to exacerbate injuries or mess up any recoveries, though. So in truth, this is just smart business from Day and his staff to try and keep his team as healthy as possible.
