3) Phillies infielder Josh Harrison could be gone earlier than expected

On an affordable contract Philadelphia should be willing to eat if they have better options, Josh Harrison’s days with this ball club could be numbered. A 1 for 6 beginning is too small of a sample to tell much about him. Following a bad spring where he was 10 for 44, it’s more confirmation the team might have wanted to look elsewhere for a utility man.

Harrison has played third base, left field, and even pitched for the Phillies already this season. The latter is something we’ll hope he doesn’t have to do again. The team has been blown out enough early on.

Because Harrison doesn’t have any minor league options, the Phillies will only have the choice to designate him for assignment. Would they pull the trigger quickly on this? His performance and how guys in the minors who could fill his role will matter a lot in the decision-making process.

Kody Clemens is definitely someone to watch and even Scott Kingery could steal Harrison’s roster spot. Patience with Harrison should be thin. If he’s just another veteran who doesn’t offer the team any spark, saying goodbye quickly could be in the cards.

The health of Harrison’s teammates may also give him a slightly longer leash. Because he can play multiple positions, the Phillies can have a little more patience with him than they should with an optional player such as Cave.
