College football news: Kyle McCord gets huge leg up in Ohio State QB battle

Given that C.J. Stroud was a two-time Heisman Trophy finalist for the Ohio State Buckeyes, replacing him was never going to be a simple task for Ryan Day and his staff. However, the perception coming into the spring was that Kyle McCord did have an edge over Devin Brown given a bit more experience in the program and at the position — even if neither saw the field much while Stroud was in the building.

Throughout the spring, that narrative seemed to continue as McCord impressed and seemingly took control of the quarterback battle in Columbus. But the latest update on the situation should all but solidify that McCord will win the job over Brown.

On Wednesday, it was reported that Devin Brown underwent surgery on a finger on his throwing hand and will miss the Ohio State spring game. That’s a tough break for the quarterback who had impressed in his own right throughout practices in this period.

Day, via 247Sports, did note that a decision has not yet been made at quarterback, noting what the process would be from here on out.

I think after the spring, we’ll go through, take a look at the numbers, who graded out a champion, completion percentage, those types of things that’ll help us,” Day said. “But for Kyle and Tristan, great opportunity on Saturday to put it on the field — ’cause, ultimately, you can say that it’s the same and it’s not. It’s just not the same being here, practicing in front of a small group as opposed to being in the stadium.”

That’s the big key right there. Day is clearly weighing the spring game into the equation and, with McCord already being the perceived No. 1 option in the battle combined with Brown now not being able to play, we might as well start projected Kyle McCord to be under center for Ohio State come September.
