Major college football news is abound with spring camps wrapping up with updates on Alabama and Ohio State QB battles, and a big-name Texas transfer.
With spring practices and games around the college football world wrapping up, a lot of information and news is coming out from around the country. And that’s only going to further increase in the next couple of weeks with the transfer portal set to re-open and player movement to ramp up once again.
If it’s not transfers or the potential transfers, the other thing that college football fans have been widely concerned with is the quarterback battles. Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Texas and many others have some questions at QB that they are diving into this spring. So what’s the latest there? We do have some key updates for two key battles.
So with that, let’s dive into some of the biggest college football news on the wire this week and see what it means for the respective programs.
College football news: Texas loses key weapon with Brenen Thompson in transfer portal
As mentioned, a lot of the attention on Texas football this offseason has been on the quarterback room, which is what happens when you have Arch Manning coming into the program. Not only has there been quite a bit of talk about the uber-hyped quarterback recruit getting into his burnt orange digs, but Quinn Ewers has impressed as the incumbent starter and it’s likely that another former highly-recruited quarterback, Maalik Murphy, could transfer out.
However, it’s one of the guys that any of these three signal-callers could be throwing to that is for sure going into the portal, former 4-star wide receiver Brenen Thompson.
Thompson has requested to enter the transfer portal when the window officially re-opens on April 15, as reported by Nick Harris of Rivals.
Thompson only had one reception for 32 yards as a true freshman a year ago, but saw the field in nine games, a clear sign that head coach Steve Sarkisian had high hopes for the Top 150 recruit in the 2022 recruiting class.
Texas isn’t necessarily hurting at receiver with returning starters Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington being joined by Georgia transfer AD Mitchell. However, with the future of the position and the ever-important need for depth, losing a player with the upside and talent of Thompson is tough. That’s especially true of the Longhorns, a team likely to rely more heavily on the passing game than last year now that Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson have departed.
