USMNT news: Sargent scores past Steffen, Pulisic on way out, Berhalter was close to job
Recent USMNT news includes a report on Josh Sargent’s Norwich matchup against Zack Steffen’s Middlesbrough. Christian Pulisic looks to be on his way out of Chelsea, and it has been revealed how close Gregg Berhalter was to continue on as head coach of the Stars and Stripes.
USMNT news: Sargent scores past Steffan
Sargent scored past his international teammate Steffen in the Championship yesterday. However, the goalkeeper had the last laugh as his Middlesbrough side beat Norwich 5-1. The result is a big blow to the Canaries’ playoff hopes.
His goal will only go down as a consolation but it was a very well-worked solo goal. Norwich sits just outside the playoff places, so it is touch-and-go as to whether they will make it to the Premier League next season.
Norwich legend Teemu Pukki recently announced that he will be leaving Carrow Road at the end of the season. Whilst his departure is a blow for the team, it is a big opportunity for Sargent to step up. The American has often been played on the wing or behind the central striker but with Pukki gone it would allow him to lead the Norwich line.
Sargent now has 12 goals in 37 Championship games this season, which is a very good return considering the varied positions in Norwich’s attack that he has played. In his only season in the Premier League, Sargent managed just two goals in 26 matches. Under former USMNT forward David Wagner at Norwich they will be desperate to get back to the top flight.
The player started his career at Werder Bremen after playing youth soccer for St. Louis Scott Gallagher SC and the IMG Academy. At just 23, Sargent looks to have a long career in Europe ahead of him but we could one day see him in MLS with St. Louis City.
Tom Bogert reported, “St. Louis City chose Josh Sargent for their first right of refusal. So, if the USMNT/Norwich City FWD ever comes to MLS, STL has the 1st chance (or will be compensated if he goes to another team).”
USMNT news: Pulisic to leave Chelsea
According to the Mirror, “Chelsea will have to launch a fire sale this summer as they face the financial blow of being out of Europe next season. There are doubts over (the future of) Christian Pulisic who has become a bit-part figure.”
The Blues have become a mid of a miss this season under their new owner Todd Boehly. They have recently turned to club legend Frank Lampard to steady the ship until the end of the season. Pulisic had a good record under Lampard in the manager’s first stint in charge. However, Pulisic was left on the bench in their defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League this week.
USMNT news: Berhalter was close to staying with the USMNT
A recent article on Yahoo Sports has revealed that after the USMNT’s loss to the Netherlands in Qatar, Berhalter was a “heavy favourite to retain his job as head coach.” The piece reflects how unfortunate the manager was to be at the leadership summit which ultimately led to Berhalter being without a job.
