Eagles rumors: Trade for Budda Baker
Budda Baker has long been a locker room leader in Arizona, but after a 4-13 season, the Cardinals star is tired of losing. Baker requested a trade last week, and there are plenty of teams lining up to trade for the two-time All-Pro. The Philadelphia Eagles should be one of those teams.
NFL.com’s Grant Gordon laid out the situation with Baker’s contract, which arguably makes him an even more attractive target:
"“He has two seasons remaining on his current contract after signing a four-year, $59 million extension ahead of the 2020 campaign. Baker is due non-guaranteed base salaries of $13.09 million and $14.2 million in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Currently, he is the seventh-highest-paid safety on an annual basis, per Over the Cap.”"
Baker may want a new contract — that much is not clear — but the fact he has years remaining on his deal and he’s not the highest-paid safety in football mean Arizona can receive a nice haul if they decide to trade him.
FanSided’s Scott Rogust theorized that the Eagles could be a solid landing spot for Baker.
"“This offseason, the team saw a big exodus of talent, especially on the defensive side of the line of scrimmage, even though they did manage to keep both of their top cornerbacks in James Bradberry and Darius Slay. Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave signed a lucrative deal with the San Francisco 49ers and linebacker T.J. Edwards joined the Chicago Bears. But, there’s also the fact that the Eagles lost both of their top safeties on the depth chart.”"
Losing both safeties means Philly has to move fast and sure up their secondary. Despite signing Hurts and thus limiting their cap space, Howie Roseman can do some financial gymnastics and make such a trade happen.
