Splash trades the Minnesota Vikings could make for Trey Lance: Trade Number 3

Let’s say the Cousins/Lance relationship isn’t something the Vikings want to risk en route to trying to win a Super Bowl. Since Lance is supposed to be ready for the majority of offseason work, and for sure by Week 1, let’s figure out a deal where Cousins gets sent over to San Francisco, making Brock Purdy the backup for this year.

Real quick: San Francisco will have to figure out how to absorb the $20 million cap hit from Cousins’ contract this year. Although, as the old saying goes, “the cap is a myth,” and John Lynch will figure it out.

In this deal, the 49ers don’t end up with a first-round pick. But, what they do end up with is a quarterback who is perfect for running a Kyle Shanahan offense. Cousins is a guy who typically tries to take what the defense gives him, and Shanahan is the best in the NFL at scheming his weapons open.

If Cousins has an open weapon, half the job is done for him, and that’s where he shines.

In addition to Cousins as a one-year rental (or maybe more) the 49ers do get a second and fourth-round pick to work with next year; both of which could be very valuable when Shanahan has some input.

Alas, the Vikings have their quarterback of the future. But, Lance still has to pan out, so to speak. There are a lot of question marks about whether or not he’s ready for the NFL, and he’ll have to answer those questions in a hurry without Cousins ahead of him on the depth chart.
