1. Dallas Cowboys

After seven seasons, the Cowboys decided to release Ezekiel Elliot. The move saved the Cowboys nearly $11 million towards their 2023 payroll, but it left a gaping hole at the running back position. Elliot commanded nearly 250 touches last season.

The Cowboys need to find a thunder to Tony Pollard’s lightning. Pollard was excellent last season en route to earning his first Pro Bowl nod, but the Cowboys have always shown a reluctance to feature him in a true three-down role.

Not to mention, the Cowboys had to place the franchise tag on Tony Pollard this offseason because they could not find common ground in contract negotiations. There is no commitment to the young stud running back beyond this season.

Tony Pollard is also still in the rehabilitation process since breaking his leg in last season’s NFC Divisional Round when the Cowboys lost to the 49ers.

The Cowboys also moved on from former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore this offseason. The highly-touted coordinator decided to sign with the Chargers.

Dallas finished last season with the sixth most carries by a team in 2022 but that wasn’t enough for Mike McCarthy, who is going to be taking over play-calling duties for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys are looking to further establish their identity as a run-first team while also adding a bruising and physical running back to play alongside Tony Pollard.

Joe Mixon fits that mold perfectly and would slide into Ezekiel Elliot’s role seamlessly while also providing a notable upgrade to this backfield and offense.
