MLB Rumors: Do the Cardinals have a trade to make?

The St. Louis Cardinals are struggling, despite a win over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night. They sit at 10-16 on the season, and are stressing to their fans a simple message — don’t panic.

While early, the Cards to have several trade options on the table, should they choose. A strength for St. Louis is their outfield, and they could trade from that strength for a starting pitcher. The pitching staff is something Cardinals president John Mozeliak should have addressed this offseason, but instead chose to believe in the likes of Adam Wainwright, Jack Flaherty, Miles Mikolas and more. It hasn’t worked so far, and won’t be enough in September.

In a recent article, FanSided MLB Insider Robert Murray analyzed three trade packages, all of which aimed at improving the St. Louis rotation. The best of the deals involved the Tampa Bay Rays, and a Tyler O’Neill for Tyler Glasnow swap:

"“If Glasnow was healthy, I think this trade has a chance. He’s still recovering from an oblique strain that has sidelined him to open the regular season, though he faced live hitters on Monday, and could return at some point in mid-May. If he can return and be effective … then we may have something here. But I think a trade that sends Glasnow to St. Louis for O’Neill is unlikely. Glasnow was a trade candidate last season before signing a two-year, $30.35 million contract extension with the Rays. He’s earning $5.35 million in 2023 and $25 million in 2024, which bought out his first year of free agency. So he won’t be cheap.”"

Murray did note that this specific deal remains unlikely at this point, but the construct of said trade is close to what St. Louis should look for if they want to improve the pitching staff.
