MLB Rumors: Yankees option Red Sox sleeper cell after horrendous start

Whenever Franchy Cordero was with the rival Boston Red Sox over the past couple of seasons, he was a deserved punching bag for New York Yankees. Hitting .209 with 143 strikeouts over 132 games in Boston while making a number of defensive miscues will make you an easy target, to be sure.

So it was much to the chagrin of Yankees fans when, prior to Opening Day, New York signed Cordero to a major-league deal and, surprisingly, played him quite often early in the season, especially in the wake of injuries to Giancarlo Stanton and others.

After some brief flashes, though, Cordero started to look more like a Red Sox sleeper cell than an actual asset in pinstripes, which led to the decision on Friday night to option the veteran outfielder to Triple-A.

In 18 games with the Yankees, Cordero was slashing a dismal .151/.182/.396 on the season with 20 strikeouts. It had gotten substantially worse after a relatively good start for the 28-year-old as he was 0-for-15 in his recent at-bats and 5-for-43 in his last 15 games for New York. And that, again, doesn’t bring into account some costly defensive errors on his part either.

If Franchy was a sleeper cell sent from Boston to try and hurt the Yankees, though, he might’ve done too good of a job given that he left New York no choice but to send him down to Triple-A.
