Cowboys Draft Grades for Luke Schoonmaker: B+

Yes, the Cowboys could’ve had Darnell Washington. Frankly, I would’ve preferred that. However, the medicals on the Georgia behemoth clearly scared teams around the league as he eventually fell to the Steelers in the third round. More importantly, though, Dallas was able to quite effectively fill the glaring hole at tight end with a player who is being vastly underrated, possibly because of the role he was most often asked to play in college.

Luke Schoonmaker is clearly an in-line tight end based on his tape and is a quality blocker on the edge, something the Cowboys have long valued but haven’t necessarily had in Dalton Schultz. More importantly, the Michigan product has terrific suddenness in his route-running that allows him to separate and he’s a natural pass-catcher when the ball is thrown his way too.

While it’s not a sexy option, Schoonmaker should be able to start on Day 1 and be an effective option in the offense as both a blocker and pass-catcher.

123. Pick Analysis. Texas. 3. player. Scouting Report. LB. DeMarvion Overshown

Cowboys Draft Grades for DeMarvion Overshown: C+

The Cowboys moving Micah Parsons around and playing the majority of his snaps on the edge means that the roster was thin at linebacker, so they needed to take a swing. However, DeMarvion Overshown being the swing to take in the third round is going to require some convincing.

Make no mistake, there’s a lot to like about Overshown. The converted safety is a bit slight at 229 pounds but his explosiveness, speed, and range as a run defender make him dangerous in space. Moreover, he should contribute on special teams right away.

With that said, his lack of size shows up on tape when he gets eaten up by blockers who get hands on him. He’s also very evidently still raw in terms of the nuances of the position. Perhaps Dan Quinn has plans to move him around in hybrid roles too, but as of right now, Overshown feels like too much of an unsure project to grade highly as a third-rounder.
