Cowboys Draft Grades for every 2023 draft pick: Luke Schoonmaker a sleeper, DeMarvion Overshown has questions
Cowboys Draft Grades for Eric Scott Jr.: C+
Considering that Eric Scott Jr. only ran a 4.71-second 40 at his pro day, it was a bit odd for the Cowboys to take him with the first pick of the sixth round, especially since they traded up to do so. Those are the big reasons why this pick isn’t getting an overly favorable grade.
That being said, Scott has an 80-inch wingspan, shows good quickness on film, and did well with his testing in terms of explosiveness. That sounds like the type of cornerback that Dan Quinn often succeeded with in Seattle, so it’s pretty easy to track the logic for this selection, especially for a position group that needed depth.
Cowboys Draft Grades for Deuce Vaughn: B+
Full disclosure, it’s impossible to not love Deuce Vaughn. He was an absolute electric factory throughout his career at Kansas State and is one of the most fun and dynamic running backs in the draft. The problem, of course, is that the list of 5-foot-5, 179-pound players in the NFL is virtually nonexistent.
Having said that, Vaughn has the talent to be the exception in that capacity. He won’t fill the Ezekiel Elliott role by any stretch, but does serve as a gadget player with high-upside and is also someone who could split some return duties with Kavontae Turpin.
Cowboys Draft Grades for Jalen Brooks: C-
Taking a shot on a wide receiver was something that Dallas indeed needed to do in order to deepen that position group, especially with Brandin Cooks potentially being only a short-term fix (a good one, but still short-term). Even still, I’m not sure Jalen Brooks was the pick.
When you look at the body type of the 6-foot-2, 200-pounder, you’d think that potentially he could come into the Noah Brown role as a run-blocker on the outside. However, Brooks graded out poorly in that capacity at South Carolina and offers little as an athlete. He might have a hard time making the roster when it’s all said and done.
