MLB Rumors: White Sox will trade Lucas Giolito eventually

In eight starts so far this season, White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito has a 3.59 ERA. He’s arguably the most consistent member of the starting rotation. Why, then, would Rich Hahn trade Giolito? Well, that’s rather simple.

Chicago is atrocious, and they missed their World Series window. After making the postseason in the shortened 2020 season, the White Sox haven’t lived up to expectations and must rework their young core. It makes sense for the ChiSox to trade away some players on expiring contracts, especially those who play a demanding position, and are doing so at an elite level.

Giolito is pitching at an All-Star level. Assuming he continues to put up these numbers, he could fetch some decent prospect capital despite his contract. FanSided MLB Insider Robert Murray agrees with this assessment:

"“While Cease is unlikely to be traded, it would hardly be surprising to see Giolito moved in July. He’s in a contract year and has bounced back after a down 2022 season, posting a 3.59 ERA and 50/11 strikeout-to walk ratio in eight starts.”"

Giolito has been one of the best pitchers in baseball so far this season. Pitcher-needy teams like the Atlanta Braves and St. Louis Cardinals make a lot of sense, especially considering both are in the National League. Chicago would avoid helping a contender.
