MLB Rumors: Royals should deal Aroldis Chapman while they can

The Kansas City Royals took a flyer on Aroldis Chapman this offseason after he fell out of favor with the New York Yankees. It turns out that one-year expiring contract could pay dividends when the trade deadline comes around.

KC isn’t going anywhere, at least not this season. They still need more pieces, though perhaps some players who are MLB-ready, or close, as their window could open either in 2024 or 2025. Chapman has struggled of late, giving up two runs or more twice in his last three outings. It’s proof that, at this stage of his career, Chapman should not be used as an everyday closer. Time off is essential for this 35-year-old.

MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco did explain why it’s unlikely any deal happens until late June, at the very earliest:

"“While the Royals are receiving early trade interest, it’s unlikely any deal will come together in the immediate future. For one, Chapman can’t be traded without his consent until next month. Major league free agents who sign MLB contracts receive an automatic no-trade right until June 15 of the following season under the collective bargaining agreement. Even if Chapman were amenable to waiving that to join a contender within the next five weeks, it’s rare to see trades of significance hammered out this early in the season.”"

Chapman’s contract has plenty of incentives for him to make more than the $3 million base value. If Kansas City is smart, they’ll make a contender pay that bill, and earn some prospect capital at the same time.
