Braves Rumors: Could Alex Anthopoulos trade Vaughn Grissom?

It’s not secret that Vaughn Grissom has fallen out of favor in Atlanta. Thought to be the ideal replacement for Dansby Swanson at shortstop, Grissom has struggled defensively, and now ranks at least third on the organizational depth chart at the position behind Orlando Arcia and Braden Shewmake.

Grissom is just 22 years old and, if the Braves or another team can find a new position for him, could prove valuable at the plate. Grissom’s best attribute it his bat, despite some struggles at the plate this season. Some of that can be attributed to the pressures of playing an unfamiliar role, and replacing The Sheriff at Truist Park.

A fresh start could be wise for everyone involved. Anthopoulos doesn’t have much in terms of trade assets — the prospect cupboard is running thin — and Grissom is young enough with some positive MLB experience. Rival teams notice that, and he could fetch some pitching help in return. Playing in a different organization where he can grow and afford to make mistakes would be a positive experience for Grissom.

What’s happening now in Gwinnett isn’t good for his long-term development, and the Braves don’t have anywhere to put Grissom besides shortstop. Second base is filled long-term by Ozzie Albies. Marcell Ozuna has turned things around in the outfield and is hitting with power. Even Travis d’Arnaud is a good designated hitter.

Give Grissom a chance to shine. Trade from a position of strength, and add to an area of weakness in return. Arcia is signed to a team-friendly multiyear deal. Why force this to work?
