The Lakers will need Summer League to get developmental reps for their 2023 first-round pick and other young players. When and where will they be playing?

The most interesting parts of the Lakers’ offseason will probably come in free agency as they figure out what to do with D’Angelo Russell, Rui Hachimura, and Austin Reaves and potentially pursue Chris Paul. But while their young players didn’t play a huge role this past season, they have a few interesting names to fill out their Summer League roster.

The Lakers have the No. 17 pick in the first round and the No. 47 pick in the second round of this year’s draft. With that first-round pick, in particular, they may be looking for a player who could push for meaningful rotation minutes next season.

The Lakers also have 24-year-old Cole Swider, 20-year-old Max Christie and, potentially, 23-year-old Scotty Pippen Jr. who is a restricted free agent after his two-way contract expired. Around those young pieces will be the usual cast of fringe role players and long-term projects auditioning for a roster spot.

Lakers Summer League schedule:

The Lakers have two different NBA Summer League events on their schedule. On July 3 and July 5, they’ll be playing in the California Classic Summer League — a six-team tournament in Sacramento that will also include the Kings, Heat, Hornets, Warriors and Spurs. The Lakers have two games scheduled in this tournament — against the Heat on July 3 and against the Spurs (and Victor Wembanyama) on July 5.

The Lakers will be in Las Vegas with the other 29 NBA teams for the NBA2K24 Summer League, from July 7-17. This 10-day tournament features the entire league and is what most people are thinking of when they refer to NBA Summer League. The actual game schedule for this event isn’t out yet but all Lakers games should be available to watch on tv or stream online, either through NBATV, or the ESPN network.
