Braves Rumors: Rotation reinforcements for Tigers doubleheader
With the Braves set to play two games against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday after their Tuesday matchup was rained out, Atlanta has called up pitcher Dylan Dodd to start the second game of the doubleheader. Dodd, who struggled in his brief tenure in the majors early this season, receives a second chance when he needs it most. Atlanta’s rotation is rather barren behind Charlie Morton, Spencer Strider and Bryce Elder, as Jared Shuster and A.J. Smith-Shawver have been filling in for the time being.
MLB allows for an additional player to be added to the roster for a doubleheader, so Dodd is officially the 27th player on the Braves roster, making it all the more likely he’s sent right back down barring a historic effort on Wednesday.
As Sports Illustrated suggested in their report on the subject, Dodd still has some work to do before he becomes a major-league regular:
"“Dodd, 2-1 with a 6.64 ERA, has started four games for Atlanta this season at the major league level. Considered to be bound for AAA this season entering spring training, he quickly established himself as one of two contenders for the 5th rotation spot along with Jared Shuster. In his four starts, however, he gave up five home runs and didn’t quite show overwhelming stuff, with only ten strikeouts to five walks in twenty and a third innings.”"
Dodd was deemed one of the best stories of Atlanta’s spring training, as his ascent up the Braves rotation ranks was unforeseen by the fanbase.
