The Cubs have pre-emptively moved Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians to a new start time due to weather in the area.

After a late start on Saturday night, Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Guardians players probably won’t be too upset about the opportunity to come to the ballpark late on Sunday. Already, early on Sunday morning, the Cubs have announced that their afternoon game against the Guardians will be moved to a new start time.

Weather that hit the Chicago area on Friday and Saturday poured down, keeping Saturday’s game from starting on time. First pitch finally happened at about 9:00 p.m., just about two hours after it was supposed to.

This comes after games earlier in the week were initially in question — but went on as scheduled — due to air quality concerns as Canadian wildfire smoke poured over into the midwest.

Here’s the latest on when to expect Sunday’s game to start at Wrigley Field.

Is the Cubs game today canceled?

Far from it, at least so far. The game has been rescheduled for later in the afternoon on Sunday, July 2.

Cubs rain delay update: Cubs-Guardians start time after weather delay

4:54 p.m. CT: Sunday’s game is now tentatively scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. CT.

3:27 p.m. CT: The Cubs announced that due to the downpours in the area, they are in an official weather delay. Rain has hit the area extremely hard all day long. For those of you who know the secret of parking by the lake and walking underneath Lake Shore Drive to get to Addison Street, you know how bad this situation is. The underpass that goes beneath LSD was flooded almost to its ceiling on Sunday afternoon, forcing pedestrians to have to exit at the Belmont or Irving Park underpass, but not before getting rain dumped on them.

This post will be updated as more information is learned about the Cubs rain delay.

Before 8:00 a.m. in Chicago, it was announced that the Cubs and Guardians would move the game, originally scheduled for 1:20 p.m., to 4:05 p.m.

So, if you’re heading out to the park today, take it easy, relax, you’ve got some extra time to get there.

And if you’ve got plans to watch on TV, maybe pop in a movie while you wait for first pitch.

The Cubs are one entity impacted by the weather in the area. NASCAR is another. The first ever NASCAR street race is taking place around Grant Park in downtown Chicago this weekend, and Saturday’s race could not complete due to the weather. Concerts for fans in attendance were also called off.

NASCAR is running the Xfinity race as well as the Cup Series race on Sunday for a full day of festivities.

But on the northside, expect first pitch shortly after 4:00 p.m. We’ll keep this post updated if we learn otherwise.
