Jameis Winston Jumps Joe Burrow, Christian McCaffrey in Comeback Player of the Year Odds

It’s still crazy to me that people actually thought Taysom Hill had a chance at winning the starting job over Jameis Winston. The Saints destroyed the Packers in Week 1, 38-3, largely because of the outstanding play of Winston. 

“Famous Jameis” was in full effect, throwing 5 touchdowns with a 70% completion rate. Winston’s MVP odds crashed following the great performance, and so did his Comeback Player of the Year odds.

WynnBET has his odds to win the award at +500, which is still a ways away from Dak Prescott (+150). At +500, Winston jumped Joe Burrow (+650) and Christian McCaffrey (+650) in the standings.

If Winston were to win the award, he wouldn’t fit the typical criteria. He wasn’t injured last season, but was behind both Drew Brees and Taysom Hill on the depth chart. Since, he rode the pine last year, he qualifies.

Right now, the award still seems to be Prescott’s to lose, but Winston is a real threat now -- and it will be hard to not give him the award if he plays at an MVP level. 

Winston’s performance even got the attention of his predecessor, Drew Brees.

New Orleans is still without Michael Thomas, and will be for at least the first six weeks. That makes Winston’s performance that much more impressive. Winston spread the ball around, with Adam Trautman receiving the most targets (6). 

If Winston can keep this level of play up, the oddsmakers will have no choice but to keep moving him closer to Prescott. Until then, Winston will just have to focus on his MVP campaign.
