MLB Rumors: Blake Snell's surprising new suitor

It feels like reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell has no market. He's searching for an absurdly large contract that no team is willing to pay. With no teams willling to pay, his price tag will eventually have to drop, and that could open the door to a number of exciting possibilities including the potential for a homecoming. Snell is a Seattle native and could be an option for the Seattle Mariners if his price dips.

The Mariners have had an incredibly disappointing offseason, using players like Jarred Kelenic, Eugenio Suarez, and Robbie Ray as pure salary dumps. They did sign Mitch Garver, but lost Teoscar Hernandez and have only moved further away from the Astros and Rangers in the AL West.

While it's been disappointing to see the Mariners shed payroll, perhaps it's all part of a master plan to lure Snell to come back home. Jim Bowden of The Athletic notes that the Mariners are listening to trades involving pitchers in their rotation. If they can trade one of them for a bat and sign Snell to take the place of the departed starter, suddenly Seattle would be right back in the AL West race.

It's hard to see the Mariners pulling off a Snell signing because of how they've approached their payroll this offseason, but it'd certainly be a move that puts Seattle right back in the thick of AL West contention if they pull it off.
