Mexico World Cup 2014: El Tri’s Chicharito comments on benching

Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez is one of the most talented players on the Mexico roster for the 2014 World Cup. However, when the Mexico World Cup starting XI was announced for their opener against Cameroon on Friday, manager Miguel Herrera opted to place Chicharito on the bench.

Instead of starting Chicharito up front, El Tri will be rolling with the duo of Oribe Peralta and Giovani Dos Santos.

Chicharito will come off of the bench in hopes of sparking the Mexico attack when they need an extra burst of energy the most.

After Mexico closed out training today in preparation of their World Cup opener in less than 24 hours, Chicharito spoke out on his benching and it looks like he will be using his position as a sub as some extra motivation to pick up his play.

“No player in the world wants to be on the bench. I’m tired of people seeing me as a super sub,” Chicharito told the media after training on Thursday afternoon.

While benching Chicharito may be a controversial decision, there is no doubt that Peralta and Dos Santos are a more cohesive duo up front and their chemistry is what led to them being paired together in the starting XI.

However, if Chicharito uses that chip on his shoulder to pick up his play in Brazil, he could earn a spot in the starting lineup before it is all said and done.

The starting XI for El Tri can be seen below:

GK: Guillermo Ochoa

DEF: Paul Aguilar, Francisco Rodriguez, Rafa Marquez, Hector Moreno, Miguel Layun

MID: Gallito Vazquez, Hector Herrera, Andres Guardado

FWD: Oribe Peralta, Giovani Dos Santos

Of course, if the team struggles in the World Cup opener against Cameroon, we can expect to see some line up changes moving forward for their matches against host nation Brazil and Croatia.
