Chiefs’ Alex Smith doesn’t want Andy Dalton-type contract
By Sam Richmond
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton received a massive six-year, $115 million contract extension this week that originally had the NFL world up in arms. However, it was later revealed that the contract wasn’t as friendly to Dalton as previously thought. As Brian Petchesky on Deadspin pointed out, “It’s basically a two-year, $25 million deal, with a series of one-year team options after that.”

So, in all likelihood Dalton won’t ever see the full $115 million, or even close to that amount.
This is the type of extension that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, who is the midst of contract talks, is trying to avoid.
From Tom Pelissero of USA Today Sports:
"“I want to get something that’s right that I’m going to play out, absolutely, and that’s definitely a focus of mine,” Smith told USA TODAY Sports after Saturday’s training camp practice.(…)Asked directly if he’d sign Dalton’s contract if the Chiefs offered it, Smith said, “We’re on the record. That’s a tough question. Certainly, I think it’s a tough thing. I look at both Andy and Kap and they’re both on their rookie deals. They’re both second-round picks in the new rookie wage scale, so what were their salaries? It’s a very different situation for me.”"
It’s a smart desire for Smith. While a Dalton-type deal might be flashier and get Smith more attention, contract stability is what’s ultimately important, especially in a league like the NFL where a player’s value can change in an instance.
Smith also added that he hoped to get a deal done prior to the season. He threw for 3,313 yards and 23 touchdowns this past season.
