Brandon Meriweather will return to Washington’s facilities this week after having served a two-game suspension for yet another dirty hit — this one a helmet-to-helmet collision on Torrey Smith in the team’s third preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens. He brings with him the same aggressive mentality that got him to the NFL, but with the awareness that his tackling style must change.

“I have no choice but to consciously tell myself to do it now,” Meriweather said per the Washington Post. “It’s nothing I’m willing to chance. I’m not trying to get kicked out of the league just to hit somebody hard. It’s just something I’m going to have to do.”

Of course, don’t take this to mean receivers can run up the middle of the field without fear of a big hit. Meriweather promises those will be a staple of his play. “I’m going to go out the same, play aggressive, do all the things I’ve been doing — just lower my target down even more.”

If Meriweather stands by his word, he’ll finally be adhering to the standards by which the NFL has tried to hold its players for the last few years. He may not like the changes, but it appears that Brandon Meriweather prefers playing by the rules to not playing at all.
