While the New York Knicks plan to do what they can regarding a playoff birth for the upcoming season, they know they’re in the midst of a re-building year. Given that, there has been speculation that power forward Amare Stoudemire and his expiring contract could be traded.

Will the New York Knicks pull the trigger though? More importantly, will they have the opportunity?

There has been noise suggesting the Philadelphia 76ers may be willing to accept Amare Stoudemire’s salary in a trade though Phil Jackson and the New York Knicks aren’t looking to move him for salary relief. What they want is a talented player in return which is why Larry Coon suggests Stoudemire could be on his way out if such an offer comes the New York Knicks’ way, though is quick to point out the potentially damaging salary cap ramifications.

"Do the Knicks eat the salary for the last year of his contract, or do they get something for him now if they can? They could have about $25M in cap room next summer if they wait it out, but I can see Phil getting the ball rolling by bringing in someone he wants if he has the chance."

The biggest issue here is if the New York Knicks would be willing to eat up part of their cap space in a deal or if they’d prefer to let Amare Stoudemire walk at season end.

Outside of the previously mentioned 76ers, there aren’t many teams who can either absorb Stoudemire’s deal or give the Knicks massive expiring contracts in return, so trading the veteran forward will put a hamper on the Knicks’ salary cap next season.
