Texas Rangers will interview eight candidates

The Texas Rangers have already interviewed two internal candidates to replace Ron Washington as the team’s manager, and will interview six more candidates this week, including five from outside the organization, with none of the applicants possessing any full-time MLB managing experience.

The Rangers have already interviewed pitching coach Mike Maddux and third-base coach Steve Buechele, and hope to have a decision on a skipper by the World Series. Candidates to be interviewed this week will include interim manager Tim Bogar, Cleveland Indians bullpen coach Kevin Cash, Boston Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo, Pittsburgh Pirates bench coach Jeff Bannister, and Chicago White Sox third base coach Joe McEwing.

Former MLB player and coach Alex Cora, who’s now managing Caguas in the Puerto Rico Winter League, will also be interviewed by Texas this week.

Washington abruptly resigned on September 5, and later said he stepped down to focus on his marriage. Bogar led the Rangers to a 14-8 record in Texas’s final stretch, including 13 of the last 16 games the Rangers played. Bogar appeared to be the favorite for the full-time job, but he also will interview for the Arizona Diamondbacks’ open manager position. If the Rangers feel Bogar is their guy, expect the team to act quickly to prevent Bogar from being hired elsewhere. Maddux would likely stay on as pitching coach if Bogar were to be retained, but he’s a hot managerial candidate himself, and might land a position elsewhere.
