Torey Lovullo, the bench coach of the Boston Red Sox, will interview with the Texas Rangers for their vacant managerial position.

Boston Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo has been thought of as a managerial candidate for a while now, notably interviewing for the Chicago Cubs last offseason.

According to reports, Lovullo will interview with the Texas Rangers on Tuesday while he has also been granted permission to interview with the Minnesota Twins.

Jason Mastrodonato of MassLive.com reported the Texas interview, while Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe had the information about the Twins:

Texas has a plethora of candidates—Cleveland Indians bullpen coach Kevin Cash, former Chicago White Sox coach Alex Cora, current White Sox third base coach Joe McEwing and interim manager Tim Bogar.

Known candidates in Minnesota include Oakland A’s bench coach Chip Hale, current Twins coach Paul Molitor, Twins’ minor-league manager Doug Mientkiewicz and former Pittsburgh Pirates manager John Russell.

Once upon a time, Lovullo was a prized prospect in the Detroit Tigers’ organization. The late Sparky Anderson, then managing the Tigers, once said of Lovullo: “There’s really nothing Torey Lovullo can’t do.”

That was after Lovullo hit .381 in 21 at-bats late in the 1988 season. So Lovullo was rushed to the majors and given the third base job the following spring. He hit .115/.233/.172 in 29 games and was sent back to Triple-A.

He was a lifetime .224/.301/.335 hitter in 303 games over parts of eight seasons with the Tigers, New York Yankees, California Angels, Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics, Cleveland Indians and Philadelphia Phillies.

Lovullo has a 661-609 record in nine seasons as a minor-league manager in the organizations of the Indians and Red Sox. Lovullo joined manager John Farrell with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011 and went with Farrell to Boston in 2013.
